Tien Shan Brown Bear

Ursus arctos isabellinus

A pale mountain bear moving between berry slope, forest edge, and snow.

Status Least Concern
Habitat western Tien Shan walnut forest edge and alpine meadow with yellow autumn leaves, juniper slopes, stones, cool air, and early snow high above
Diet Omnivore
Lifespan 30-50 years
Weight 80-550 kg

In the walnut forests and high meadows of the western Tien Shan, autumn has a dry sweetness. Leaves yellow along the valleys, juniper darkens the slopes, and stones roll under a heavy footstep in the brush. A bear appears between trunks, pale brown in the angled light, nose working through the air.

The Tien Shan brown bear carries weight without hurry. It turns logs, digs at roots, stands briefly to test scent, then drops again into the work of feeding before winter closes the passes. In open meadow it can seem exposed, but near forest edge it becomes surprisingly difficult to follow, a large body broken by stems, shadow, and slope. Cubs learn where fruit ripens, where insects hide under stones, where snow lingers, and how quickly a human smell can change the day.

This bear links woodland, meadow, and alpine country through appetite and movement. Seeds travel with it, soil opens under its claws, carcasses are found and finished. Conflict, habitat loss, roads, and illegal killing make its routes more dangerous. Still, before snow, one bear crosses a yellow hillside, carrying the season toward sleep.
