Sun Bear

Helarctos malayanus

A small dark bear with a moon on its chest, prying sweetness from the forest.

Status Vulnerable
Habitat Borneo lowland rainforest with rotting logs, termite galleries, honey trees, damp leaf litter, lianas, and mottled tropical shade
Diet Omnivore
Lifespan 30-50 years
Weight 80-550 kg

In the low forest of Borneo, a log gives a soft crack in the wet heat. The bear has found it. Claws hook into rotten wood, shoulders bunch, and the trunk opens to ants, grubs, and honey scent. A golden patch shows on the chest when the animal rises, brief as light through leaves.

The sun bear carries great purpose in a compact body. Its paws are broad, its claws long and curved, its tongue made for reaching into spaces the face cannot enter. It climbs with rough confidence, tears into nests, turns wood, noses through fruit, and reads the forest by smell. The short black coat gleams when rain touches it. The ears are small, the expression intent, almost private. For all its size, it can change a clearing by entering it; everything smaller understands those claws, and everything sweet has reason to fear that nose.

By feeding, digging, and opening wood, the bear makes opportunity for insects, seedlings, and other animals that follow the damage. But snares, trade, and lost forest press hard on a creature that needs cover and old trees. The log lies split behind it. The bear moves on, carrying the scent of honey deeper into shade.
